The normal aging of skin results in loss of elasticity, the onset of facial wrinkles and lines, and often pigmentation changes. Sun exposure accelerates the process and causes a more weathered appearance to the facial skin. Non-surgical techniques available to help reverse the signs of aging include dermal fillers, Botox® Cosmetic, fat injections, chemical peels, and laser treatments. These techniques are frequently used in our younger patients who are not ready for surgical treatment of the signs of facial aging.
Botulinum toxin is approved for treatment of frown lines between the eyebrows and for the fine wrinkles (“crow’s feet”) that occur along the outside of the eyelids. Treatment of both areas can result in a more refreshed appearance of your upper face. The injections are done in the office, do not require any anesthetic, and have minimal side effects. The injections temporarily cause paralysis of the facial muscles at the injection site. It may take up to 2 weeks for the full effect to take place. The paralysis generally lasts about 3 months. Dermal fillers are gel-like materials injected into deeper folds or wrinkles of your face to help erase signs of aging. The materials can also be used to enhance the fullness of lips. These fillers are an inert substance that is normally present in the deeper layers of your skin. The injections can be uncomfortable and may require a topical anesthetic or in the case of lip injections a local anesthetic can be used to anesthetize the area. The effect of the filler is temporary lasting about 7 months. Your surgeon can help you decide if a filler is right for you. For more information contact our office or visit Juvederm®.com.
Fat injections are used not only to fill deeper facial skin folds but also to restore a more youthful, fuller face. We also have successfully used fat injections to improve the appearance of scars on the face as well as other areas of the body. The procedure generally can be completed in the office using a local anesthetic. Fat is normally harvested from your tummy although other areas can be used. The positive effect of fat injections is long lasting but multiple sessions may be necessary for an optimal result.
With aging facial skin may lose many of the qualities of healthy skin such as radiance, clarity and lack of fine wrinkles. Even with the use of sun screens and a routine moisturizing program, facial skin may need more treatment to eliminate spots, fine lines, and dry, weathered skin. A facial peel is a topical treatment with a blend of chemicals designed to induce exfoliation of the dry outer skin layer, elimination of “age spots” and fine lines, and restoration of a more youthful “glow” of the skin. A series of peels may be required for an optimal result. Contact our office for an evaluation to see if a peel is right for you. For more information visit ThePerfectPeel.com.
Laser is used in plastic surgery for the elimination of fine facial wrinkles, treatment of small vascular lesions and some scars or tattoos. Facial laser resurfacing as well as other laser procedures are performed as an out-patient.
